Belize, Here We Come!

In just a few short days we’re off for Belize! And we can’t wait! Not that we’re not enjoying the lovely fall weather that we’re (finally) having, but 90 degree weather doesn’t sound half bad right now either. As you may recall, we decided to go to Belize after a pretty good sale that coincided with a 4 day break that our son has from school. We were anxious for another trip between our April Siem Reap and Vietnam adventures and our upcoming Australia trip in December. And Belize seemed to fit the bill.

But, it isn’t going to be cheap. We have each allocated our $500 Spark Cash bonuses to this trip, but that’s all she wrote in terms of covering our expenses with credit card sign up bonuses. So, we’ve been trying to minimize expenses without sacrificing our experiences in our attempt to pack our short time in Belize full. We’ll outline our total costs at the end of our trip once everything has been totaled, but so far, we only have a general outline of what we’d like to do for activities.

We’ll be spending 2.5 days in San Pedro on Ambergis Caye. The most popular activities are the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray alley. Both locations involve swimming with a variety of sea life and many claim it’s a “not to be missed” activity. But, our kids have never officially snorkeled so we’ve decided that we’ll make use of the resort’s free kayaks to paddle out to the nearby reef and try snorkeling there. If the kids enjoy that, maybe we’ll give the controlled experience a try. That sort of snorkeling has never been of much interest to me, but so many have recommended it that we may have to give it a try.

Our other two days are going to be spent in the jungle around San Ignacio. We’re looking forward to visiting some Mayan ruins and spending some time in nature and with wildlife in Belize. The kids really enjoyed meeting lots of new animals in Costa Rica and I hope that their experiences in Belize are similar. And none of us have had the privilege of visiting Mayan ruins before so that should be a fun family activity!

Unfortunately, the forecast doesn’t look the greatest. Basically, they are forecasting some sort of rain everyday that we’re there. But, the forecast has changed so much over the past few days that I’m hopeful we’ll have some nice days! Regardless of the weather, I’m sure we’ll have a great time!

I’ll have a full review of our trip to Belize once we’re home, but if you’d like to follow along our activities while we’re gone, be sure to “like” Our Frugal Life on Facebook. And, of course, if you have any recommendations for places to eat in San Pedro, we’d love to hear them!
