Intercontinental Asiana Saigon Review

Our next stop on our Siem Reap and Vietnamese adventure was Ho Chi Minh City. After a 4 hour delay getting out of Siem Reap, we arrived into Ho Chi Minh City, grabbed our Vietnamese visas and luggage, and were off to the Intercontinental Asiana Saigon.

Upon departing the airport, we realized that Ho Chi Minh City was entirely different than Siem Reap. It was huge. And busy. And there were motorcycles. Everywhere. Given that we arrived around rush hour, it took us about 45 minutes to get to the hotel. We were supposed to have spent that day taking a tour of the city, but since our flight was delayed, our guide simply picked us up at the airport and brought us to the hotel instead. He waited while we got checked in and freshened up before we headed out on our night/food tour.

There was some construction going on on the outside of the hotel when we arrived, but we quickly found our way to the Ambassador desk where we were helped promptly. Due to our IHG Platinum status, we received a room on a higher floor, a voucher for laundering 2 garments per reservation, and a welcome amenity of fruit. I should note that we had two reservations because my husband and I each used our annual free night certificates for our two night stay in Ho Chi Minh City which we get every year after paying the $49 annual fee on our IHG credit card. We didn’t have to move rooms as our reservations were linked, but we did get a voucher for 4 garments to be laundered!

Our room was on the small side which I expected being in a bigger city. We had a corner room and had views of the pool and of the roof of the old US embassy where many were evacuated just before Saigon fell in 1975.

We chose a room with a king size bed because there were four of us. We brought an air mattress with us in case we weren’t able to get a rollaway and given the size of the room, a rollaway was not possible at the Intercontinental.

Although the room was on the small size, it was updated nicely. The bathroom was huge which is welcomed by our family of four as it always seems that there is more than one person in there.

A couple of things about the hotel to note. It is a high rise hotel on a busy street. We were not bothered by street noise at all, but it is in the middle of the city. We started our walking tour right from our hotel which was nice, but it was a ton of walking that night. Also, because it is a hotel, there are a lot of floors. We never waited too long for an elevator, but the morning we checked out, we did wait a bit.

There is a bar/restaurant on the lobby floor that we tried out one night. It has a library-like atmosphere and we really enjoyed ourselves. It was pricey as all hotel bars are, but it was enjoyable.

Overall, the Intercontinental Asiana Saigon was just what we were looking for with our two night stop in Ho Chi Minh City. It was a perfect hotel at which to use our IHG free night certificates and if we’re ever back in Ho Chi Minh City again, we wouldn’t hesitate to return!
